Spiritual Faith and Service

Campus Ministry

While the entire staff ministers to students throughout the year in many ways, it is the task of the Campus Ministry Department to develop and coordinate certain specific student programs in which faculty & staff take leading roles.

These programs involve a variety of experiences as seen through the lens of the Catholic Christian tradition and flavored by the Ignatian charism. These programs in turn allow our students to become aware that God is alive and active in their daily lives.

Through prayer, liturgies, Sacraments, retreats, faith sharing, pastoral counseling, and peer ministry, students grow in this faith both as individuals and as a community. Notre Dame builds on values learned within the family by encouraging students to develop life-long faith convictions and lasting relationships with God in and through God’s people.

The Campus Ministry department and Holy Cross Leaders work together to provide engaging ways for both students and faculty to pray together. Each year we host Bible study, student-led prayer services, guided meditations, retreats, prayer at the beginning of each class, morning prayer at the beginning of the announcements, daily rosary, worship band, and lectio divina.
There are many spaces on campus dedicated to worship and to provide students and faculty with quiet time to reflect. These sacred spaces include St. Joseph’s Chapel, Campus Ministry, prayer space in Moreau Hall, the Labyrinth, Holy Cross Courtyard with the stations of the Cross, and the Plaza of Our Lady.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation, which is also referred to as “confession” is regularly offered on campus in St. Joseph’s Chapel for both students and faculty. Reconciliation is a Sacrament of healing; we receive forgiveness for our sins. It is an intimate encounter with God’s mercy and grace. An examination of conscience is the best way to prepare for the sacrament to give yourself time to reflect on shortcomings and where you need God’s mercy the most.

Each month we come together as one family to celebrate a schoolwide Mass. Holy Cross Leaders work with our priests and the Director of Campus Ministry to create a lively and welcoming atmosphere for worship. Each month they serve as Lectors, Greeters, Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and altar servers. Mass is also celebrated every first Friday of each month for our faculty and staff in St. Joseph’s Chapel.
Eucharistic Adoration is an ancient practice and is at the center of our faith on campus. Eucharistic Adoration is made available on our retreats and regularly on campus in St. Joseph’s Chapel to focus our prayer and connection more deeply with the true presence of God. As we adore Christ’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament, we enter more deeply into the mystery of God’s love for us. For many years, dating back to as early as 1849, the Congregation had the practice of uniting across the world to keep constant vigil and prayer before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. It was one of the spiritual devotions closest to the heart of our founder, Blessed Basile Moreau.
Every Friday morning faculty and staff gather together in prayer for our Holy Cross Communion Service. This is an opportunity to center ourselves in prayer and fellowship to foster deeper relationships with one another.
Holy Cross Leaders are selected upon application and interview process. All juniors are encouraged to apply. Students are also nominated by faculty in their junior year. Holy Cross Leaders engage in all aspects of prayer on campus. The leadership areas include liturgy planning and implementation, prayer services, retreat leadership, hospitality, and being a guide for Holy Cross faith and spirituality.

The retreat program is designed to give students at each grade level opportunities to develop spiritually by recognizing God in the people and events of their lives. This is one of the most direct ways we fulfill our mission of helping students bring their faith values to their daily lives. A variety of activities are used to bring students together and to help them reflect on Christian values and teachings: liturgies and prayer services, peer leadership, music, films, presentations, journal, quiet prayer time, recreation, small and large group discussions and sharing.
