Notre Dame High School has been fortunate to have called Sherman Oaks, CA, its home for the past 75 years. We are a community of caring, professional, and hard-working people who focus on creating the best possible situation for students, faculty, staff — and our neighbors. We do thank you for your patience with the parking situation as we share these streets. We are actively trying to mitigate any problems that arise. Many of our neighbors have been told that there has been a long-standing agreement between Notre Dame and the neighbors residing on Morrison, Huston, and Ventura Canyon Blvd. In consultation with police and law enforcement, we were informed that the streets of Morrison, Huston, and Ventura Canyon Blvd are considered public streets with no street signs prohibiting parking. According to California law, rules, and regulations, a licensed driver is allowed to park on streets in areas not marked specifically for loading, unloading, emergency, handicapped, etc. Though Notre Dame has and continues to notify our school community (students, parents, teachers, and visitors) not to park on those streets, not to block driveways, and also to park legally, and to be highly considerate of our neighbors, Notre Dame is not allowed to ban or prohibit licensed drivers from parking on public streets if it legal to do so. What Notre Dame has already explored, has implemented, or is in the process of implementing:
1) We offer 220 spaces for student parking on campus
2) We require our students who drive on a regular basis to Notre Dame to register with us and receive a yellow windshield sticker for identification purposes
3) Daily announcements directly to students noting parking concerns and issues and monthly announcements directly to parents noting parking concerns and issues
4) ND utilizes volunteers to monitor the flow of traffic in the morning and afternoon every school day
5) Union Bank building - the management does not want any students parking on their property
6) Westfield Fashion Square - the current proposal is that their management wants students to pay $300 per spot for a total of 100 spots. At the same time, Notre Dame is still in negotiations with this group. we are aware that it will not alleviate the entire parking situation
7) South side of Riverside Blvd - we are waiting on the City of LA’s assessment and for more information (this includes possibly adding a stop light/crosswalk on Sunnyslope)
8) We are placing signage on ND fences stating that neighbors should call parking enforcement or police if they feel cars are parking illegally
9) Postal communications have been sent out to the neighborhood discussing the situation with parking and will continue to be sent out
10) Notifications to the SONC, NextDoor, SOHA, and other community groups noting the issue
As a resident on these streets, you are able to do the following:
A. If a car is parked illegally, blocking your driveway, in a green/red/white/yellow zone, on your property, hit or damaged your car, etc., please contact either the police or parking enforcement at 866.561.9742. Police/police enforcement will be able to handle the situation as needed.
B. If the car with a yellow 23-24 windshield sticker is blocking your driveway or has caused an issue, please call us at 818.933.3612.
PLEASE NOTE: We cannot identify a Notre Dame student without this yellow 23-24 sticker on their windshield. We do not keep license plates, makes, and models of vehicles on file.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Liza Molina Smith in NDHS' Engagement Office via email molinasmith@ndhs.org or phone at 818.933.3612. We do greatly appreciate your patience and thank you for your attention to this matter.
